Many drivers use these two terms as if they mean the same thing. They don’t. Each fixes a different problem, and knowing which you need saves time and money.
What is wheel alignment?
Alignment adjusts the angle of your wheels so they point straight and sit properly on the road, as set by your car’s manufacturer. It fixes pulling to one side and uneven tyre wear.
What is wheel balancing?
Balancing makes sure weight is spread evenly around each wheel and tyre. Small weights are added where needed. It fixes vibration, especially at higher speeds.
Which one do you need?
Quick Diagnostic Guide
Symptom & Fix| What you notice | Likely fix |
|---|---|
| Car pulls to one side | Alignment |
| Steering wheel crooked when driving straight | Alignment |
| One edge of a tyre wearing faster | Alignment |
| Steering wheel or seat vibrates at speed | Balancing |
| Shaking that gets worse as you go faster | Balancing |
Do you need both?
Often, yes. It’s a good idea to have both done when you fit new tyres, so they wear evenly and ride smoothly from the start. After hitting a deep pothole, alignment is usually the first thing to check.
